We’ve been waiting for Sony’s upcoming virtual reality headset ever since they first showed it off at CES 2022. With almost a year of delay, the company has now confirmed that the PlayStation VR2 will be available next year in February. Sony will also launch the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller charging station which eliminates the need for wired charging and uses a simple click-in design.

Features and Specifications

The PS VR2 headset enables high-resolution 4000 x 2040 gaming in Virtual Reality and takes a major leap forward in the gaming experience, hardware, and features over its predecessor. The VR2 comes with Eye Tracking, Haptic Feedback, Adaptive Triggers, and 3D Audio, which together, should enable a more realistic gaming experience. The new headset is also way more powerful.

VR2’s new design is slightly slimmer and it weighs a little bit less as well. The lenses can be adjusted, so users also don’t need to stick to the default setup, in case it feels uncomfortable.

The display also enables up to 120Hz refresh rate for a smoother gaming experience with low latency. The 110 degrees ultrawide field of view should help players to see more at a glance and of course, they can also look around and explore the gaming worlds like reality.

PS VR2 Specifications

  • Display Type: OLED
  • Resolution (Per Eye): 2000 x 2040
  • Resolution (Total): 4000 x 2040
  • Refresh Rate: 90Hz, 120Hz
  • Field of View: 110 degrees (approx)
  • Lens Separation: Adjustable
  • Connector: Type-C
  • Motion Sensor: Six-axis motion sensing system (three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer)
  • Attachment Sensor: IR Proximity sensor
  • Camera(s): Four cameras for headset and controller tracking with an IR camera for eye tracking per eye
  • Feedback Type: Haptic Vibration

The Sense Controllers use USB Type-C to charge and Bluetooth 5.1 to connect to the console. You can also use the Charging Station to charge the controller. However, you’ll need to connect the VR headset to the PS5 with a USB Type-C cable as wireless connectivity isn’t available.

PlayStation VR2 – Pricing and Availability

The VR headset will cost you $549.99, but there’s also a PlayStation VR2 Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle that will cost you $599.99 and come with a voucher code for the game. The Sense Controller Charging Station will be available at $49.99 and while it isn’t necessary, it does allow you to charge your controllers without plugging them into the PS5’s USB ports.

While the availability of the PlayStation 5 has been a complete nightmare, I’m expecting a better situation for the PS VR2 as there’s going to be a very niche category of users who would want to spend the extra cash to get this one.

Sony will start selling the PS VR2 starting February 22nd of 2023 and Pre-orders are going live on November 15th, 2022. If you plan on pre-ordering the PS VR2 headset, you can register your interest on PlayStation’s website right away.
