Tabs in File Explorer are finally a thing as Windows just released a new update to enable this feature in Windows 11 version 22H2. The feature has been available for the Windows Insider community for some time now, and the Windows team is finally making it available to the general public.

What are Tabs in Windows 11 22H2?

Microsoft has been experimenting with Web Browser style Tabs in File Explorer, for a long time now. It was first introduced in a previous Insider build a long time ago, and it seemed like the feature directly adopted the Tabs from Microsoft Edge, making the File Explorer windows feel like web browser tabs instead. As expected, it wasn’t even close to being ready for a public release and was pulled in the next Insider build.

This new release introduces a more mature version of Tabs. They still function similarly to web browser tabs, but no longer feel like an extension of Microsoft Edge. You can now have multiple folders in File Explorer without opening new windows for each one of them.
