Different Type Of Laptops and Their Capabilities
These deals can be confusing because of the specification similarities and crowding around various price points, but different laptops handle different types of tasks better than others. For example, laptops with decent mid-range specs handle regular office tasks just fine, but they’re not for gaming or content creation.
At the same time, affordable gaming laptops will serve their purpose well but often come with display compromises. So, even if there’s enough processing power, these aren’t great for color-accurate work. Although, most premium gaming laptops do come with color-accurate displays while being capable of a top-notch gaming experience.
On the creator side, you can now get laptops with high-res OLED and Mini-LED displays with excellent color accuracy alongside having special features and great performance. However, although these generally have less weight compared to gaming laptops, they often still have a considerable amount of heft to them.
Then there’s the thin and light segment which offers premium laptops for work and study. These weigh considerably less and can range anywhere from less than 1 kg to 1.5 kg. That makes them easy to carry for backpacks and these also get better battery performance. These also have excellent keyboards and trackpads.
Finally, we have the mid-range and budget (non-gaming) segments. This is where you spend less and give up on some of the premium features. The budget laptops are mostly useful for basic day-to-day work while the mid-rangers mostly focus on one or two core areas (for example, Processing Power, Display Quality, etc.) while cutting corners in other areas to reach certain price points.
How To Decide What Laptop To Get?
Depending on your budget and specific needs, it’s not going to be very hard to pick a great laptop. Of course, you can easily choose the best one for yourself from the above list of products, but I’ll make the overall process a bit easier for you. Take a look at the list below and it should give you a better idea about what type of laptop makes the most sense for you,
- If your workflow is handling basic day-to-day tasks like taking notes, watching a few videos, etc., you can easily get by using a budget laptop.
- In case you need slightly more power, get a mid-range device. You mostly get a good processor with an okay-ish display or a good display with an okay-ish processor. These don’t usually come with a dedicated graphics card.
- Higher-mid-range devices have good displays & processors and some of them come with dedicated graphics cards. These are great for getting some light to moderate graphics work done alongside maybe some light (720P) gaming.
- Ultrabooks are easy to carry and great for productivity & business workflows.
- For gaming laptops, you look for the best GPU, a good CPU, a Display with a fast refresh rate & quick response time, and fast Storage, available in your desired price range. Based on that, you choose from Budget (affordable), Mid-rage, or Premium segments. Higher the segment, the better the features and overall gaming experience.
- Good creator laptops should have an excellent CPU, preferably with a high-core count alongside at least 16GB RAM (32GB or more for 3D modeling), the fastest storage you can find, great port availability, and of course an excellent display.
