If you are an avid Apple user, especially an iPhone user, you know that the brand now sells their chargers separately and not in the box. This has increased their sales exponentially but brought along a lot of grievances from the users.
The existent Apple charger is a measly 30W charger that can charge one device at a time and is priced at $50. If you are considering buying one, we’d recommend waiting it out for a few more months because looks like Apple has something even better lined up for the users.
Apple is rumored to replace their existing chargers with a 35W dual-port charger powered by the gallium nitride (GaN) technology.
As picked up by 9to5Mac, this leak wasn’t from any unofficial sources but came directly from Apple’s official website. The developers accidentally uploaded a live support document, titled, “Apple 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter.” And, thankfully enough, 9to5Mac was able to record it.
This isn’t the first speculation about a redefined and redesigned Apple charger because analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted about the same last month.
With the dual-port charger, users will now be able to charge two of their Apple devices without any concerns. So, not just an iPhone and iWatch but even a MacBook and iPhone can be charged simultaneously, making the process more seamless.
Apple has been playing in the GaN charging territory for sometime now. Their first GaN charger was the one that came out of the box with the 16-inch MacBook Pro last year. However, if the official leak is true, it is confirmed that the upcoming charger would be Apple’s very first dual-port charger with USB-Type C support.
This could be Apple’s chance to break into the market and offer something more native and refined than what’s already there. There are several pre-existing brands that offer dual-port USB-C chargers that offer a much faster charging speed.
Further reports from 9to5Mac suggests that the support document states that the charger can function in either one of the four modes – 5VDC/3A, 9VDC/3A, 15VDC/2.33A, or 20VDC/1.75A. Since the total power output is 35W for the two ports, each device can be charged at 15W, or the other at 27W and 5W each.
The support document doesn’t mention any release date or official availability of this upcoming dual-port charger. However, they do mention that the charger won’t come with a USB cable.
