We have been hearing about the AMD 7000 series of mobile CPUs for a while and now we’re finally getting some laptops powered by these chips. AMD’s latest mobile chips have started to appear everywhere, from cheaper budget laptops to premium ultrabooks. Considering how the 6000 series have performed, the expectations for these new CPUs are incredibly high.
AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Is Making Its Way To Laptops
AMD has divided its product line quite diversely this year. With Desktop CPUs taking the backseat in the world of computers, Team Red has put a lot of thought into their latest laptop CPUs and while the ones capable of high performance still stay ahead, the budget lineup has received a significant revamp in terms of raw capabilities.
The value-oriented Acer Aspire 3 and the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 have received upgrades with budget Ryzen 7000 series CPUs including the Ryzen 3 7320U and Ryzen 5 7520U. The IdeaPad 1 also has lower-end variants with AMD Athlon Silver 7120U and AMD Athlon Gold 7220U CPUs.
The ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED on the other hand, has received upgrades with the higher-end Ryzen 5 7530U and Ryzen 7 7730U CPUs. This should be a substantial bump from the last-gen models considering they were still running on the 5000-series.
AMD 7000 Series – Specifications
Right now I do not have information on the complete lineup of the AMD 7000 Series Mobile CPUs. However, I can give you the highlighting specifications for all the variants I’ve mentioned above.
AMD 7000 Series Budget CPUs
- AMD Athlon Silver 7120U: 2C/2T, up to 3.5 GHz, AMD Radeon 610M Graphics
- AMD Athlon Gold 7220U: 2C/2T, up to 3.7 GHz, AMD Radeon 610M Graphics
- AMD Ryzen 3 7320U: 4C/8T, up to 4.1 GHz, AMD Radeon 610M Graphics
- AMD Ryzen 5 7520U: 4C/8T, up to 4.3 GHz, AMD Radeon 610M Graphics
AMD 7000 Series Premium CPUs
- AMD Ryzen 5 7530U: 6C/12T, up to 4.3 GHz, AMD Radeon Graphics (GPU variant not yet specified)
- AMD Ryzen 7 7730U: 8C/16T, up to 4.5 GHz, AMD Radeon Graphics (GPU variant not yet specified)
The above specifications were taken from Lenovo and ASUS’ official listings and as AMD is yet to list these CPUs officially on their website, I don’t have a lot more to share on this right now. However, what I can tell you is that the budget Ryzen CPUs are built on the 6nm Process Technology, and have last-gen Zen 2 cores while the Radeon 610M is based on RDNA 2 graphics. AMD is calling these new Budget CPUs, “Mendocino“.

RDNA 2 Can Improve Budget Gaming Experience By A Lot
Right now most budget laptops have terrible gaming performance because their integrated GPUs can’t keep up with anything that goes above the bare minimum. However, the budget AMD 7000 Series Mobile CPUs may just change that. The Radeon 610M which is the integrated GPU for all these cheaper processors, is based on AMD’s RDNA 2 graphics. In the past, we have seen RDNA 2 doing wonders for gaming, and it is so good, even the latest flagship gaming consoles from Microsoft and Sony use it in their AMD GPUs.
While I’m not expecting budget laptops to compete with dedicated gaming laptops or premium consoles anytime soon, at least now users may finally be able to play some games on them. However, I do need to see the real-world performance before I can comment on this further.
